Priscilla and and her husband Rick began raising New Forest Ponies in
Montana just before retiring from teaching in California in 1990. It began
with the purchase of Forest Hill Martian, Robnic Easter Angel, Jacob's
Annette and then a few months later Jacob's Cracker, Forest Hill Margee
and Jacob's Dancer. These were their foundation stock, but there were
many others along the way. The ranch which they named Cheval De Bois was
also their registered prefix with England. In 2009 they retired from
raising the ponies. The remaining ponies, Forest Hill Martian, Robnic's
Easter Angel( Bunny) and Cheval De Bois St. Beatrice went on a new
adventure to Canada with Dallas Grubenmann at Pferde Traum Farm. Over 30
progeny have been named with the Cheval De Bois prefix and although
retired, the Hawkyards are happy to have well-bred ponies all over Canada
and the United States.

I
am 35 yrs old and an eventer by trade. We started breeding NFP's after
the loss of my TB stallion. I really enjoy riding the ponies, it brings me
back to my Pony Club days! I am mother of four (aged 6,3,2 &baby) , I
teach Pony Club and coach & compete in 3-day eventing. We stand three
stallions: Manoravon Master Majestic, Fox Hollow Holly's Legacy and Forest
Hill Martian. I also maintain the NFPSNA website. |

I dare say fate played a hand in
shaping my life with New Forest Ponies. It all goes back to a grade school
assignment when a friend and I had to write a report about a specific
country—England for us. And what national report would be complete without
including the horses from that country? Working diligently from The
Encyclopedia of The Horse, we made note of the breeds that originated in
England, including the New Forest Pony. Of all the breeds, of all the pages
in that huge book, it was the pictures of the New Forest ponies that my
friend’s handwriting got transcribed onto as she pressed hard on her pen
while taking notes. Later, every time I opened that book (frequently), I
always stopped at the New Forest page, drawn in first by the cursive blue
ink, and then transfixed by the ponies. No doubt about it, I remain
transfixed today.
Horse
crazy from day one, I’ve always been lucky to have horses and ponies in my
life. Quite honestly, I don’t know what I would do without them! I recently
relocated to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina,
and at present have 11 horses and ponies; nine of them are either pure- or
part-bred NFPs. As the operator of a small breeding and training farm, I’m
committed to increasing awareness of this breed, promoting their
versatility.
After working for several
breeding farms in the past, it was a natural draw for me to have my own
breeding program. After spending several years working with trainers on
dressage and jumping, New Forest ponies, with their innate talent for these
disciplines, quickly won me over. Somehow, through all this, I managed to
focus enough to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology and masters in
statistics, only to be followed by a career in, of all things, marketing.
After working for a few direct & database marketing companies, including a
tack cataloger, I now telecommute for a Global Interactive Marketing
Services company based out of Little Rock, AR, as a product manager.
I’ve also just stepped into some
very big shoes, previously filled by Lynn Jahl; I am now editing the NFPSNA
Newsletter. Thanks for all the warm welcomes! Though I’m sure there will be
some challenges, seeing the new articles and pictures come across makes it
well worth while, so please keep them coming my way!

I am a pedigree geek having first been exposed to New Forest ponies over 3
decades ago at Mrs. Mary Wilson's Jacob's Hill Farm in Seekonk, MA where,
for many years, I was one of her barn kids helping break in ponies and
handle young stock. My background experience, while predominantly
hunter/jumper, also includes Pony Club and dressage.

A native Montanan, I grew up on a ranch in rural south
central MT. I wanted to be a veterinarian and I did just that, graduating
from Washington SU in 1974 with a vet degree. After a few years in AZ, I
found myself back in MT, where I owned a small animal vet practice from 1986
to 2007. Then, in 1993, I earned an MBA. I was on the MVMA board, then
served as president in 1999. I was also on the MT Board of Veterinarians
from 2002-2007.
I've always loved horses and have had them most of my life. In 1997 I
started taking riding lessons from a dressage rider and found that there was
a difference riding and riding well. I have continued along the dressage
track and love it. I first became aware of New Forest ponies when I saw an
article about Forrest Flame (Jacodi’s Anja’s Amoz) in Dressage Today, when
he was three. A few years later, when my sister was looking at for a pony
for her grandchildren, I suggested they look at NFPs. We purchased one from
Priscilla Hawkyard, Cheval De Bois St. Genvieve, "Gen." When we went to buy
Gen, I met Forest Hill Jemima— "Abbey, " but knew I already had too many
horses. However, I told Priscilla I would work with her in exchange for
breeding my other NFP mare, Silverlea Marie Noele, to Forest Hill Mar-tian.
Abbey had lots of trust issues and didn't think people had much to offer
her. After working with her for about 8 months and using my Parelli skills
to win her confidence, I decided I couldn't send her back.
I now have Abbey, Marie and Marie’s 2 foals, Gabriel Creek Wrangler
(4-year-old) and Little Levi (2-year-old) and a NFP/QH foal by Wrangler (now
gelded). I do love the ponies. Unfortunately, both Marie and Abbey have
compelled me to learn about Equine Metabolic syndrome and pony founder
issues.
Since I sold my vet practice, I am moving in the direction of holistic
medicine, working more with horses. I am taking an equine osteopathic course
in San Marcos, TX, and will be become a test ride facilitator for Balance
saddles. I just got back from a 3-day seminar on the Biomechanics of
Movement with an English osteopath, Gavin Scoffield, which was also very
interesting. Just wish I was 20 years younger so I could put it to use
longer. Unfortunately this kind of information and education wasn't around
20 years ago!! |

I have
been horse crazy my whole life. I got my first pony when I was nine years
old. I have owned many wonderful ponies and horses since. Over the years,
I’ve competed in horse shows, eventing and carriage driving competitions.
After earning my BS in Equine Studies from Centenary College, I worked at a
few different horse farms riding hunt seat and dressage, fox hunting, racing
Standardbreds, and competing in combined driving [carriage driving]. Now I
live on a 30-acre farm in the middle of New Jersey with my husband and my
12-year-old daughter, one horse and six ponies, one of which is our New
Forest!
We trail ride and carriage drive mostly for pleasure right now. Maybe there
will be some competitions in the future. We purchased our 4-year-old New
Forest Pony, Forest Flair, from Lesley Feakins. He has just come back home
from being trained to ride and drive. That pony has so much personality!! We
call him Mr. Nudgey Man. I am very excited about him and I think he will go
far! |

My husband
Paul and I own a small farm in Lostine, Oregon where we raise Jacob sheep,
and train horses. We also have a border collie to work the sheep, and a
Pembrooke Welsh Corgi to manage the farm. We have several cats who are in
charge of the barn and feed room. I run cows on the pasture in the summer,
have a flock of chickens, a large garden, as well as 5 horses. I have been
the District Commissioner of Wallowa Mountain Pony club, and the Vice RS
of the Inland Empire Region, for the past 6 years. Since my son and daughter
are off to college I am hoping to step down from those positions and do more
riding of my own. Our 1991 New Forest Pony,
Cheval du Bois St.Malo, “ Forrest”, was my daughter's pony and he caused us
to fall in love with the breed. His personality, and versatility are
amazing. He excelled in everything from Eventing to reining, from working
cows to trail riding. I am hoping to teach him to drive next year, and he
is currently teaching one of my young pony club girls to ride. I have also
ridden him after cows and in dressage shows. He is in the ribbons every
where he goes, and has been a cherished family member since we bought him in
the winter of 2000. I hope I can assist the NFPSNA in promoting this
wonderful breed. |

I was born and grew up in the New Forest and lived at Bull Hill Farm near Lymington. My mother bred NF ponies for many years which carried the Bull
Hill prefix.
I learned to ride on Brookside Jack, a New Forest pony who did everything,
hacked, hunted, played polo, did Pony Club, raced, showed, competed
in mounted games.
I have had a lifetime experience with horses of all breeds and taught
riding for 36 years until poor health forced me to retire.
I live in Landrum, SC and am very pleased to be asked to be on the
American NF pony board.
