News from Trevelyan Farm:

A Tribute to Mrs. Holbrook

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Mrs. Betty Holbrook on February 23, 2009.  She and Dr.Holbrook were fundamental in bringing the New Forest Ponies to Canada with the introduction of Mudeford Streak in 1960 and many others later on.  We wish for her greener pastures and endless ponies to ride.

A Tribute
A Poem to the New Forest Pony

A breed so sure of foot and safe
A dream for parents or the tiniest waif
One of the oldest breeds in every ways(sic)
Dating back to ancient British days
A pony of character stout and tough
Surviving blizzards and conditions rough.
Nature so kind, so calm, so true.
Not timid or frightened by anything new.

Noteworthy is the statue of George Bernard Shaw in Niagara-on-the-Lake. She received the Order of Canada and of Ontario and an Honorary Doctorate from McMaster University for her contribution to the arts. She also had a keen interest in music, travel and in equestrian activities. She and her husband introduced New Forest Ponies to North America. A private family burial will take place followed by a memorial service and reception on Saturday the 7th of March at 11 a.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, Ancaster. We visited the Holbrooks when they were both alive. We were able to see the model of Winston Churchill sculpture that she had made. We also were able to see Vernon's Starling (Bunny's sire) who was one of their foundation stallions, an English import. He died soon after. A funny story was that my husband was sitting in the bathroom  and looked up to see a signed picture of Albert Schweitzer. Dr. Holbrook had helped him in his hospital in Africa. According to Mrs.Holbrook there were well over 100 ponies that have gone out of the Forest Hill, New Forest Stud in Canada. Our encounter with them was a memory of a lifetime.

In Honor of 'Jacob's Cracker'

New Forest Pony Stallion - 1988-2008

Cracker has left these worldly pastures for a gallop in the sky. He was a great, sweet, pretty boy and leaves many sons and daughters. He was a foundation stallion for Cheval De Bois Ranch and then sold to Pam Dunkle where he was known as Crusoe. He finished out his life there and is sorely missed. His son Cheval De Bois Mousse (aka Jacob's Hawk) New Forest Pony stallion carries on the Jacob's genes excelling in performance and standing at stud at Hawkwing Farm in Florida. Cracker has left a lasting legacy. Good bye dear pony.
